The Argentine tango is the couple's dance par excellence, and conjures up a marked masculine and feminine imagination. Indeed, it is organised around the distribution of the roles of guide-guided between the two partners. The Argentine tango couple embrace each other, positioning themselves as comfortably as possible. The aim is to initiate contact as gently as possible.
Argentine tango is practised in a ball called a "Milonga". This is a social space where other couples move around, where meetings between dancers are organised and exchanges take place at the tables placed around the dance floor. In order to regulate these encounters, the Argentines have codified them by playing the "mirada" and the "cabeceo". In this system, the dancers look for each other with their eyes, the "mirada". When an exchange of glances takes place, the woman nods in response to the man's invitation, the "cabeceo". From then on, the Argentine tango dancer can move towards his partner to take to the dance floor.
During milongas, music acts as a social regulator. It is codified in "tandas", sequences of 3 Argentine tango songs to which it is possible to dance. These are interspersed with different music inviting couples to separate and change partners.
